Welcome to Capitol Hill
The Capitol Hill neighborhood extends east from the domed Capitol - on the north side from the Senate office buildings and, on the south side, from the House office buildings. The past 20 years have seen this neighborhood blossom into a small city of its own. Talented young chefs have created a happening food scene alongside tried- and-true political hangouts. Capitol Hill real estate is dominated by Federal and Victorian townhouses, many with separately accessed "English basements" that can be rented out separately. The outdoor food and arts "Eastern Market" as well as several neighborhood parks have made Capitol Hill a destination for young families and members of Congress alike. Metro access at Union Station, Capitol South and Eastern Market make for easy commutes around the city.

Live, Work, and Play in Capitol Hill
It’s easy to mistake yourself as the main character in an old-school romantic film when walking through the Capitol Hill neighborhood—think 19th- and early 20th-century homes with stained glass windows and iron-wrought fences. Capitol Hill homes are truly architectural wonders and can be spotted anywhere by their tell-tale turrets.
Despite Capitol Hill's amazing location near our nation's center of government, this area has maintained its small village feel through its strong sense of community. Here, you’ll find residents deeply bonded in their passion for the Hill’s politics and historical feats.
Nearby shopping & dining
Foodies are in for the time of their lives in Capitol Hill, with several nationally recognized restaurants lining its city streets. As the District’s oldest commercial district, Barracks Row has recently become one of the area’s most popular dining spots. With both otherworldly delights and American classics, the restaurants in this row will have you coming back for more.
Find everything you need at Eastern Market, a local hub for grocers and retailers. Originally built in 1873, this brick building brings authenticity to shoppers through its weekend markets. Local produce, arts and crafts, and treasured antiques are all sold here.
Parks & recreation
When you need a diversion from the DC Metro area's city streets, there are plenty of parks and green spaces to explore in Capitol Hill. A centuries-old park on the U.S. Capitol Grounds, the Bartholdi Fountain has long been a local favorite. Here, you can spread out your red checkered picnic blanket in the midst of flourishing flowers and the monumental fountain. And in case you don't recognize the name Bartholdi, he is the French sculptor who designed the fountain and also the Statue of Liberty. Folger, John Marshall, and Lincoln are a few more must-visit parks.
It’s no secret that Capitol Hill is one of the most sought-after places to live and visit. Within a few blocks of the neighborhood, you’ll encounter some of the country’s most famous monuments—the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress, just to name a few.
Other can’t-miss attractions include the Folger Shakespeare Library and the U.S. Botanic Garden at the bottom of Capitol Hill. While you should never skip over the District’s classic attractions, there are also a ton of home-grown businesses that thrive off of local support. Capitol Hill Books, District Taco, and The Market Lunch are some more local favorites.
